Solange is a rare kind of cool. Soulful and relaxed, eclectic and authentic. Her fascinating new album, made with producer Devon Hayes (Blood Orange), is an infectious dance record that pulses with youthful romance and heartbreak, incorporating influences from Motown to New Wave. Solange’s rising star will light up the streets of downtown Denton when she delivers what will surely be one of the most talked about and energetic performances of 35 Denton 2013.

Joining Solange in this year’s line-up: Indie-pop darlings Camera Obscura, returning to the U.S. from their native Glasgow for the first time in years. Their discography of brilliant, elegant pop records is loaded with enduring songs, some melancholy, some tinged with loneliness, all of them enchanting and catchy. Additionally, experimental Philly outfit Man Man will blow minds in March with their notoriously energetic live show. It’ll be a weird wild explosion of instrumentation and harmony. Man Man’s gonna get raucous, y’all.

The Cannabinoids featuring Sarah Jaffe. Seriously. Read that again. The Cannabinoids featuring Sarah Jaffe. Eightlaptops. Three turntables. Six keyboards. Four drum machines. Theremin. The Cannabinoids make live, improvisational magic. And in March, that magic will include 100% more Sarah Jaffe, as Denton’s favorite songstress joins the The Cannabinoids on stage.

New York’s Com Truise will melt minds and capture hearts. With trippy retro synth and smooth beats, his music is the soundtrack to the most badass 80s movie never made. From the west coast comes Prurient, the solo noise project of influential, prolific, multi-talented artist Dominick Fernow.

Based in Los Angeles, Fade to Mind is a record label – and a movement. A collaborative front for music, visual art, video, and apparel, F2M breathes fresh air into dance and electronic music with artists like Bok Bok, L-Vis 1990, Prince William, and Kingdom. Fullerton, California’s Burger Records is bringing a veritable chunk of its vast roster to Denton in March. Get in on the hot rockin’ action with Summer Twins, Burnt Ones, White Fang, The Memories, Pangea, Colleen Green, and John Wesley Coleman.

BUT, WAIT. THERE’S MORE.

The industrial surfgaze of Toronto’s Odonis Odonis; The sexy stonegaze heaviness of recent Relapse signees True Widow; Indiana folk rockers Houndmouth; Seattle pop rockers Deep Sea Diver; Dustin Wong’s Baltimore-based blissful guitar ecstasy. From Portland, experimental pop trio Brainstorm; Denton’s own Video: real punks, ferocious rockers. And finally, straight outta Illinois, K. Flay, one of the finest indie hip-hop MCs in the land.

Legendary swamp-metal elders EYEHATEGOD will rise from the New Orleans darkness in March to deliver their misanthropic brand of ear-splitting sludgery unto 35 Denton 2013.

Also joining this year’s roster: The Spits, Seattle’s finest purveyors of filthy jean jacket punk. On the other side of the sonic coin, festival goers will be treated to the folk-tinged, organic experimentalism of Akron/Family and the intricately whimsical guitar fury of shred-queen Marnie Stern.

We’re also pleased to announce (cue the chanting and tribal drums) the return of Brooklyn’s Prince Rama, a psychedelic phantom from the haze of 35s past, summoned once more to bring New Age chic to the 940. Don’t use all your matches to light incense, though – there’s gonna be some barn-burning, too, thanks to a couple of Texas badasses: Blue-collar truth-teller/one man band Scott H. Biram and Wayne “The Train” Hancock, the undisputed king of juke joint swing.

In addition to hosting a pair of the Lone Star State’s favorite sons, 35 Denton 2013 is proud to present two ambassadors of New Zealand kiwi kool: Seducto-synth-disco-pop purveyors The Ruby Suns and fuzzed-out psych-rockers Ghost Wave.

Check out the latest addition to the 35 Denton Cover Series in our video announcement below- featuring a stunning rendition of Scott H Biram’s “Still Drunk, Still Crazy, Still Blue” as covered by Hares on The Mountain frontman George Neal.

Also coming to Downtown Denton in the spring: Brooklyn-based noise-pop no-wave duo Talk Normal; Chicago’s darkly droning Locrian; From Montreal, the multilayered, melancholy pop of Valleys; The bruising shoegazing beauty of Whirr; The rich, orchestral folk-pop of nature-girl Dana Falconberry; Former Bad Liver and iconic Austinite Ralph White, who takes roots music to subterranean new depths; The gleefully grandiose and sugary sweet electro-decadence of Jamacian Queens; All the way from Chi-town, energetic post-punkers Gypsyblood; The brilliantly simple minimalist reverb magic of Calvin Love; And finally, Naomi Punk, a rowdy band of rockers who love nothing more than to take your mom’s time signatures and turn them inside out and upside down.

35 Denton 2013 will take place in the burgeoning arts corridor of downtown Denton, March 7-10, 2013. Four-day wristbands are available at prekindle.

35 Denton is elated to announce the first Texas performance by Chelsea Light Moving, the new band led by punk icon Thurston Moore of NYC’s legendary Sonic Youth.

With only a handful of tracks released for public consumption, 35 Denton will offer a rare opportunity to soak in Chelsea Light Moving’s snarling, skuzzy sounds in advance of the band’s forthcoming debut release on Matador Records.

In keeping with our policy of All Killer/No Filler, 35 Denton is also stoked to announce the addition of Atlanta’s preeminent street politico – Killer Mike – to our 2013 lineup. Killer Mike’s furiously thoughtful lyrics tackle the economic and social effects of the drug trade on his community, while calling out the crooked cabal of elected officials he sees pulling the strings. It’s heavy, y’all. But not as heavy as Mike Bigga’s rapid southern flow that rides the beat like Smokey and the Bandit on a Cannonball Run.

Also coming to 35 Denton in March of 2013: Electronic music pioneers, Silver Apples. The innovative duo began making psyche/pop waves in late-60’s New York, employing handmade oscillators in their compositions before synthesizers were commercially available. Minds will be blown when the hypnotic tribal drums and manipulated organic tones of Silver Apples start swirling in the skies above downtown Denton, Texas.

Finally, in an effort to totally freak you out, we’re thrilled to announce a few more of the performers bringing their respective talents to 35 Denton: Ohio’s ambient-synth explorers Emeralds; Bay Area MC Antwon; Vancouver’s ultra-energetic White Lung; ATL ladypunks The Coathangers; The surf-rock inspired sound of Shannon and the Clams; Trippy guitar-pop devotee Delicate Steve; Lynchian doo-wopper Idiot Glee; and the Leeds-based indie-folk of Fossil Collective.

Yeah, there’s more. Texas garage-folk natives Buxton; Raw OC Burger punks Audacity; Art-damaged synth-jammerGary War; Celestial dronemaster How I Quit Crack; hometown pop-punk heroes Mind Spiders; Feverish folksters You Won’t; Baltimore headbangers Roomrunner; Psych-rock auditory assault team Destruction Unit; Seattle’s very sincereHey Marseilles; Classically tinged folk family The Last Bison; And the debut appearance of DJ Jonathan Toubin’s infamous Soul Clap Dance Off competition.

Check out all the goods in our latest announcement video featuring a cover of Silver Apples’ You & I by 2013 artist Lars Larsen.

Say Texas, looks like someone’s got a case of the mondays – maybe you could use a little SLEEP?

35 Denton is pleased to include the legendary gods of stoner rock, Sleep, in our first announcement for next year’s festival, taking place March 07-10, 2013. Following their recent Southern Lord reissue of the highly-influential “Dopesmoker,” these heavy music pioneers will be making their first appearance in Texas since their 2010 reunion show in Austin.

Joining Sleep on our 2013 roster is psychedelic icon and Texas native Roky Erickson. As a founding member of the 13th Floor Elevators, this space-traveling prodigy has played a seminal role in cultivating outsider music since the late 60s.

Rounding out the first set of artists for March 2013 are Memphis garage heroes and recent Merge Records signees Reigning Sound; Germany-based psych-soul guru King Khan and the Shrines; hometown hero and hip-hop sensation Astronautalis; experimental electro enigmas Black Moth Super Rainbow; and, returning as our first ever ‘flashback’ artist, the hardworking MVPs of San Francisco, Thee Oh Sees. Additional confirms include The Soft Moon, Merchandise, Nicky Da B, Brutal Juice, K-Holes, Mac Demarco, OBN III’s, Fat Tony, Hunters, Gap Dream, Nu Sensae, Sinkane and Cloudland Canyon.
